High Commissioner for Human Rights commends Oman for the humanitarian treatment of its detainees | Oman time


Muscat: The delegation of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights welcomes the humanitarian treatment of detainees in the central prison of the Sultanate of Oman.

His Excellency Mohamed Al Nsour, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Department of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, praised what he witnessed and the humane treatment received by detainees at the central prison . Regular visits to their families are planned and a monthly allowance is paid to the detainee’s family for the duration of the execution of his sentence in the central prison. In addition to subsequent monitoring, those released receive after serving their sentence to ensure their integration into society and their return to a normal life, which reflects Oman’s interest and concern to implement international laws and to respect human rights.

During the visit, the UN team inspected the prison facilities, visited its quarters and different sections, closely monitored the services provided to the detainees, met some of them and spoke to them. He also attended the training workshops by which inmates make antiques, gifts, pottery and other handicrafts, in addition to lecture halls, the prison workshop, and learned about the activities cultural and sports activities offered to inmates, and books that are provided to prisoners through the prison’s central library. The UN delegation also visited the prison hospital and was briefed on the services provided to patients, health care provided to inmates and how to deal with various cases of illness including emergency cases. and chronic diseases.

In conclusion, the UN delegation expressed its thanks and gratitude to the Directorate General of Prisons of the Royal Oman Police, expressing the readiness of the High Commissioner to organize training courses for reformers and staff of rehabilitation in order to apply the basics and standards for prisoners in accordance with internationally agreed principles.

The United Nations delegation also welcomed the existing cooperation between the “Oman Human Rights Committee” and the General Administration of Prisons with regard to the rights of detainees, and to allow the specialists of the committee to carry out field visits in accordance with the requirements of international law. in force with regard to the rights of detainees, with the existence of channels of communication, and communicate the requests of detainees to the Committee and allow it to visit those who wish to meet it.
