Steve Martin gets the documentary treatment

There are very few comedians currently working today who have had long careers in the spotlight like actor Steve Martin. A Saturday Night Live staple and author of hit TV shows who broke the mold as The Smothers Brothers, Martin has enjoyed decades of success on stage, in film and on television. He received numerous awards throughout his career, which saw many supporting roles and lead roles that helped elevate the comedian as a well-decorated actor and performer. Now, it looks like Steve Martin is getting the honor of his life thanks to a documentary made about his life.

According to a report from The Wrap, Steve Martin will star in a feature-length documentary coming to Apple TV+. The two-part film is set to be directed by Oscar-winning Morgan Neville, best known for helming the popular film. Won’t you be my neighbor, the documentary about Fred Rogers and his rise to fame as an iconic children’s TV host. Steve Martin’s documentary will examine Martin’s personal life and his career as a talented comedian, writer and actor and director. No further information has been provided as of yet about the two-part film, including its title.

The news that Steve Martin is getting the documentary treatment should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed his career. Start as a writer on the culturally iconic The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, Martin had a long stint in the 1970s as a stand-up comedian on national comedy tours. He was one of the most prolific hosts of Saturday Night Live over several decades and frequently collaborates with fellow comedian Martin Short. To date, the two have found success in ongoing comedy tours and albums, as well as the Hulu series. Only murders in the building alongside Selena Gomez. For his work on this show, Martin was nominated for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Comedy Series as a Producer, as well as Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Only murders in the building is a real hit, with Rotten Tomatoes reflecting a 100% rating on its tomatometer.

But the buck doesn’t end there when it comes to Steve Martin’s accomplishments, which saw the actor host the Oscars multiple times. Although he was never nominated for an Oscar during his career, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Martin an honorary Oscar in 2013. In addition to his multiple Emmy Awards and five Grammy Awards, Martin is about to earn an EGOT for his lifetime of work. To date, he has been nominated twice for the Tony Award and Playbill reported that he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2005. The second season of Only murders in the building is currently streaming on Hulu and has been renewed for a third season.
